The letter on the page is one I've written to myself - to read in Ugly Emergencies!
It reads:
FEAR: an unpleasant emotion caused by the nearness of danger or expectation of pain.
MISTAKE: an incorrect idea or opinion, something done incorrectly.
Why are we so afraid of creating UGLY? - fear of making a mistake seems to be the answer. Well - if we're making art for ourselves or even for ART's sake (and what's wrong with that?) is there really a "nearness of danger or expectation of pain" if our work has been "done incorrectly"? Who's to say it's wrong and who will inflict the pain?
Seems to me 9 times out of 10 the answer is in the mirror. We're our own worst critics.
If beauty is in the eye of the beholder surely UGLY is just a different perspective - maybe - probably - a very myopic one.
People thought that Manet's work was UGLY and WRONG - yet without his vision we would likely not have had a world where Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh and Picasso were accepted as artists that created BEAUTIFUL ART.
I say embrace the UGLY - try to find something positive in it, if you describe it to others as UGLY, likelihood is they'll see it as UGLY.

Well said and done. Does that mean you are FREE to create anything? theoretically.....so go for it!
